Driving in Style with Paso Finos

by: Kathie Beeson

Picture a world of historic characters, fancy clothes, Victorian carriages, beautiful horses...A world found only in books, movies and my back yard!  Yes, with a lot of help from friends, family and finance companies, I have acquired a dream land of yesteryear.

I was thirty something when I finally fulfilled my childhood fantasy with the purchase of my first horse, a Paso Fino gelding.

I
went to shows; watched and wondered how anyone could possibly be brave enough to compete in the show ring.  Then I discovered the costume class and a whole new world opened up for me.  I could exhibit without the stress of performing.  All I'd have to do is go around the ring at one speed and line up.  Plus I could do what I liked to do best--dress up and show off!

Undaunted, discount fabric stores, thrift shops and second hand stores became my haunts.  Librarians got to know me by name.  The “costume” wheels in my head were constantly turning.

Speaking of wheels, carriages were just a natural extension of my historic fantasy life.

A few driving lessons for the horse, a lot of driving lessons for me and I started competing in another class--Pleasure Driving.  And of course, I created a costume that included a carriage.  A Cuban ballerina that traveled across the countryside performing for the common folk.  It was unique.  It won first place at the 1995 National’s in Perry, Georgia.  Since I also managed a Championship in Driving that year, there were two blue ribbons and silver trophies to be carried home in my lap!

My next dream was to drive a team of horses tandem in the costume class.  Driving tandem is difficult, but I reasoned all they’d have to do is go around the ring once and line up.  I would have to include my husband as it’s a safety issue to have someone in the carriage with you when driving a team.

Authentic patterns for 1800’s evening wear were found in a costumer’s catalogue.  My husband was dressed in a smart gray pinstripe three piece suit complete with antique top hat.  I wore a multi-tiered turquoise satin and black lace gown.  The horses were each decorated in matching satin and lace.  With carriage, harness and brass all polished until they glowed, we entered the ring at the National Show.  At first there was silence.  Then as the lead horse danced her way over to the rail with the wheeler right behind, the crowed cheered.  It was awesome!  And I had a third National Costume Championship trophy to carry home in my lap!
