I love it when I hear someone say, "I
didn't know Paso Finos could do that!" Well, I'm here to tell you "Yes
they can!" They can do it all!

Horse soccer in Great Western PFHA is
alive and well. Our first game was on May 12th and you should have
been there. The crowd was cheering, both of them (Anne Torza and
Gwinn). The horses were chomping at the bit ready to score their first
goal. Curly (Suzie), Brio (Lynne Strauss), and Valante (Doug Torza)
were discussing strategy as the opposing team horses, Yanqui (Peggy
Roos); Tedo (Judy Beal); and Chicci (Lee Snedaker) were figuring out a
way to win at all costs. Schaefer (Rodger Lanphier) was our referee.
We started out with our horses in the
round pen acquainting them to the giant ball with teeth. After only a
few minutes they all seemed to accept the fact that this was going to
be fun. Yanqui, Peggy Roos's stallion, was

so intrigued he was licking it and I have pictures to prove it! Doug
Torza’s horse, Valante, thought it was just another gate to open when
Doug told him to “open the gate” and just went to nudging it with his
nose. Neat trick Doug! Lee Snedaker’s mare, Chicci, was

awesome. Talk about a natural. I was
amazed at how wonderful they all did. I really don’t want to talk
about who’s team won 'cause if Curly ever found out it wasn’t his
team, he might not want to play again!
Our second time out was at our Pony Tracks
all-breed fun show in Golden Colorado, on May 27th. Meg Purnell on
Classy and Suzie Tiller on Curly, dribbled the ball down the arena,
guiding it back and forth with the precision of a national soccer team
and Curly scored the winning goal. He was so excited he broke the game
ball (48" beach ball).
If you would like to teach your horse how to play, just get a big
beach ball, put your horse in the round pen and move the ball away
from the horse. Pretty soon their curiosity will get the best of them!
They will smell it and push it
away
with their nose. After that it's a piece of cake. I use what is called
a "cage ball" for the game. You can search on line for this ball.
It is not cheap but it lasts a lot longer than a regular
rubber ball. Have fun! I know your horses will!
