June
28, 2007 was a special day for the children attending Vacation Bible
School at Wilsonville Baptist Church in Newport, Tennessee. The theme
for VBS was “Wild West Witness,” and as a special treat they had a
visit by Cruceiro La Estrella, a Paso Fino stallion owned by Gwen and
Steve Costner of Firesteed Paso Finos.

Over 70 children lined up to take a short ride on Cruceiro. He was
led by Gwen and assisted by one of the church members,
|
Frank Hickman, who walked beside Cruceiro and held the children.
David Williamson, another church member, helped to lift the children
and position them in the saddle.
Several ladies in the church helped to get the helmets on the children
and give them encouragement, since most of them had never ridden a
horse before. The ages of the children ranged from 2 to 12 years
old and some smaller children rode double with older brothers and
sisters with arms around each other and smiling faces.
Steve
and Gwen gave a brief explanation of some of the safety rules when
being around horses and the importance of children always wearing
helmets when they ride a horse.
After the children had ridden, Gwen gave a short exhibition on
Cruceiro, then dismounted and had him do some of his tricks for
pictures.
As
the day ended, all the adults and children gathered around Cruceiro to
have their picture made. They then surprised Gwen’s husband, Steve,
with a “Happy Birthday” song. After much applause and thanks,
Cruceiro was loaded to go home with apples as a treat for a job well
done.
